Sad Cat News

Over past few weeks my cat, Jewel, had increasingly bad kidney issues and last Thursday we decided it was best to put her down. My wife adopter Jewel when she (my wife) graduated High School and we brought Jewel to live with us about 3 years ago. About a year ago we found out that her kidneys were not in great shape and switched her on to a kidney diet. She was certainly getting old, but she still ran around our apartment and begged us to play at least once a day.

A little over a month ago we brought her to our vet (Malden Animal Hospital) because she had a UTI. We treated her with antibiotics and she seemed to be recovering well. After the antibiotics ended and before we could bring her in for a follow up, the UTI started again and we brought Jewel to Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital because Malden Animal Hospital was not open at the time. Although initial tests seemed to indicate the UTI was back (not good, but treatable with different antibiotics), her blood levels that indicated kidney issues were very high (creatinine and something else). It was bad enough that we decided to let her stay in the hospital for a few days with fluids.

She did not like the hospital, but we were able to bring her home. I don't think she fully recovered, but she was in okay spirits after a short adjustment. Due to her kidney problems she needed regular subcutaneous fluids. We brought her into Malden Animal Hospital a few times while we tried to administer them at home. We weren't sure how sustainable the fluids would be, but she always seemed much happier after the fluids. We were not successful giving her fluids at home and on Wednesday, after getting fluids at Malden Animal Hospital., she didn't perk up the way she normally did.

We scheduled an appointment with Lap of Love and Dr. Sally came to our house on Thursday. Jewel was particularly picky about being warm so we bought a heating pad and she spent all day Thursday sitting on the heating pad between my wife and me while we gave her all of the food and treats wanted. She didn't have the energy to run after lasers or get chased around, but she had enough to bat at her rainbow colored string.

We were all very sad, but Jewel clearly still found comfort curling up between us on the couch for that last day. When Dr. Sally came we sat with Jewel so she didn't have to be scared going to the vet and she died as quietly and peacefully as she could sitting on our couch.

I would like to thank every single person at Malden Animal Hospital, Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital, and Lap of Love for being so helpful and caring, for treating us and Jewel so well, and for allowing her to spend her final days warm with us on the couch.
